The One About the Hong Kong Food Diaries

Somehow, we always find ourselves going back. :)

On our recent trip to Hong Kong, it became apparent that Hon-some and I will never seem to get tired of the vibrant city.  And yes, that's coming from a pro-provincial life girl like me.  There is always something new to discover, be it a lovely park, a foodie find, a retail treasure, or a breezy January cold spell.  Upon discovering that my camera contained nothing but food snapshots, the only way to tell this story is, of course, from a gastronomical angle.

First meal of the day (and always is as in our other trips to HK) is at McDonald's because we are die-hard fans of the golden arches.  Plus, it's fun discovering new menu items that are not locally available here.  Like the Grilled Chicken Burger with real chicken fillet.  Not the mashed chicken patty type.  And we thanked our lucky stars that Twister Fries were being offered when we were there!

After lunch and checking-in, we spent the rest of the day in Kowloon and Mongkok to search for a pair of what we thought were elusive sneakers.  :)

Dinner was barbecued pork.  Another HK staple because, really, it just tastes better when eaten there. :)

The following day, when the rest of the family (just 14 of us) were getting ready for Disneyland, Hon-some and I continued searching the perfect pair of sneakers...and craft stores!  Day 2 started with breakfast at McDonald's.  I got the Tonkatsu Deluxe Set.

The breakfast set was so good I ordered it again the following day.  Hehe!  After a lot of walking, we found our shoes and a craft store and I got a couple of rulers.  Rulers?!?!  It's geek thing.  Hahaha!

No, but really, I can use them for sewing and crafts.  Like this 24-inch ruler...

Anyhoo, another HK must-eat for me is a warm bowl of the most perfect sliced pork and Century egg congee.  Steaming hot until the last spoonful. :)

Breakfast on Day 3 was at KFC.  Flava roast chicken, egg, sausage, and honey biscuit.  And then we were off to Central.

I met these beauties at Tim Ho Wan, the world's cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant. :)  We also had their siomai, steamed vegetables, machang, chicken feet, radish cake, and stuffed rice roll.  Lunch was a party in my tummy. :)

That night, we did some shopping at H&M and Page One and had pan-fried pork dumplings (10 dumplings per serving!) with pork ball soup at Silvercord.

Our four-day vacation to HK was literally a food trip!  After each heavy meal, we really had to walk off all the calories.  But then again, that's how we are.  In HK, we eat, we walk, and we get lost in the charm of the country's every nook and cranny. :)

My tummy's still thanking me to this day but my waistline and I...well, we were never the best of friends to begin with. :)

The One About Hong Kong (March 2013)

It's no secret that Hon-some and I have a love affair with Hong Kong.  We're always on the lookout for cheap airfare so we can jet off to this vibrant place!  A lot of times, we attempt to change the destination but Hong Kong still wins in the end.  Sometimes, I tell Hon-some, "Let's go to Singapore this time.  The airfare's cheap, o!"  To which he'd reply, "But it's hot there!  And you just want to go there to buy craft materials!"  Oops!  Guilty as charged!  But when I tell him, "There's a promo on HK airfare," he'd go "Lessssgggooooo!"

We visited HK again just last weekend.  It was the perfect timing since I considered it to be a gift to myself after a year of running a preschool department all by my lonesome.  Yep, you read that right.  For one year, I taught all three levels of preschool: nursery, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten.  How I managed to do that, only God knows. :)

Hong Kong was just about to welcome spring so we were able to take advantage of the last few days of the winter cold spell.  We loved the weather so much that we decided to not use our jackets and, instead, enjoyed the cool breeze.

If you have followed our HK adventures before (here, here, and here), you would have noticed that we always go and visit at least one park in HK.  You see, Hon-some and I love open spaces.  Manila just doesn't have enough of those so when we visit HK, we make it a point to visit at least one.  This time, we went to Lai Chi Kok Park.

 

  

The place was lovely.  We were ooh-ing and aah-ing every time we discovered a lovely little bridge, a small sculpture, little "casitas" for studying or reading, and playgrounds.  The park has small spots that are perfect for thinking, reading, studying, and reflecting.  It's a perfect place for me!

Obviously, Hon-some liked this part of the park. :)

I literally can live in that park! :)  We spent the next few days exploring the city, not necessarily to shop (we did buy one or two items for ourselves) but mainly to eat! 

 I had been dreaming of a warm bowl of congee days before our flight!  I finished this large steaming bowl all by myself!  Hahaha!

McDonald's is always a staple.  Just like HK parks are. :)  In the afternoons, their double patty burgers with cheese are HK$8 (around P45!) only! Also their McChicken sandwiches!

We must have weighed just as heavily as our luggage on our flight back home!  Hahaha!  Oh well...  As I write this blog post, Hon-some and I are already dreaming of our next visit to HK.  We're actually pondering on trying an overnight trip since all we ever do in HK is eat, eat, visit a park, eat, eat, and eat.  Still, I can't help but ask, "Can I visit the craft supplies stores in Mongkok next time?"  

I'm sorry!  It's the craft hoarder in me!

The One About Hong Kong (Part 3)

Okay, so on our last day in Hong Kong, we began the beautiful summer day with a trip to the Sam Tung Uk Museum.  It was nothing spectacular but then again, I like museums.  Museums tug at the geek in me. :)

It has been barely a month since we have been back and we have been wanting to go again to HK.  Thankfully, just last Sunday, we were able to score super, super, super cheap tickets from Cebu Pacific!  P2000/pax for a roundtrip ticket!!!  This time around, we'll be back in Hong Kong when the weather is cooler and people dress better.  Can't wait!
